Using a fast square wave clock, this TDR when coupled to a medium speed (50 MHz typically) or faster Oscilloscope, can be used to quickly determine key parameters about cable lengths, position of cable faults and assist in cable characterization.
Designed to attach directly to an oscilloscope input BNC, the effect of the TDR on measurements is minimized by having the male scope connector in direct line/proximity to the test BNC, which is located on the opposite side of the PCB.
In use the TDR clock signal is 'stretched' out on the oscilloscope to display the square wave 'ringing', once achieved the test cable can be attached and the un-terminated return pulse will cause a second 'bump' in the square wave to be seen on the display (see photos in listing).
Using simple math and the return path speed measured from the scope display, cable length can be determined.
